Every child that comes to the office for an initial evaluation will have a hearing screening completed if they meet the following criteria:
- Must be able to tolerate wearing headphones
- Must respond to various conditioning tasks such as dropping a block/toy for each “beep” or sound presented
- Typically be 3 years of age and above; however, some children can and do participate in a hearing screening at age 2
A pure tone threshold screening is completed using a series of pure tones to record the softest decibel (dB) level that a child will respond to at the following frequencies (Hz): 500, 1000, 2000, 4000. This screening is completed using a pure tone audiometer and age-appropriate toys as reinforcement for each response.
